Thoughts
Another pristine day for walking! Cool, essentially windless and brilliantly sunny--nothing to complain about! The 20 km walk turned out to be more like 17.5 km; piece of cake! Quiet roads, very scenic! Potato harvesting is in full swing; many full loaded potato trucks passed us during our walk. Some trucks lose some potatoes, especially through curves or turns. I think we could have easily picked up 10 to 20 lbs of potatoes had we wanted to carry them.
It seems obvious that many fishermen would live on the coast of PEI and increasingly we see evidence of this. Before Fiona we saw a number of properties with fishing boats on boat racks; since Fiona we are seeing many more. It seems like boats are towed to the owner's property and hoisted onto a boat rack. We have seen owners servicing their boats--cleaning, doing whatever upkeep is necessary. Some owners place a wooden frame over the boat and wrap it in plastic wrap. The fishing season is coming to an end though we still see oyster farms in the water.
Many fishermen who did not pull their boats out of the water in time for Fiona sustained damage as evidenced by earlier posted pictures. From our limited experience in Ontario, pleasure boats (such as sailboats) are pulled from the water and stored in a marina for the winter with shrink wrap. Here where boats are your livelihood, you take them to your home property and care for them yourself.
We have now officially finished 75% of the Island Trail! 8 more walking days and we will be on our way home again. We are looking forward to a rest day tomorrow (much needed laundry day) and will resume walking on Thursday.
